Ghost Riders In The Sky / The Ventures

2008년 록앤롤 명예의전당에 오른 전설의 락밴드 벤처스.

1958년 결성 1959년 공식 데뷔한 벤처스,

멤버들 평균이 70을 넘은 노인들임에도 아직도 활동을 하는 벤처스는

작년 2010년에는 수개월에 걸쳐 일본 공연을 했을 만큼

일본에서는 여전히 매년 공연을 펼치고 있다.

보컬이 없는 오로지 연주로만 밴드를 운영하는 instrumental 밴드가

이리도 긴 시간을 사랑 받는 경우는 사실상 벤처스가 유일하다.

단 한번도 이들의 공연을 보지는 못했지만 오래 전에 레코드를 통해서

그리고 간간히 CM이나 외국 영화에서 조용히 흘러나오는 그들의 연주 곡을 듣다 보면

1회성 음악과 긴 음악의 차이를 어렴풋이 알 것 같다.

아마 오늘 처음 벤처스의 연주를 들어본 사람들도 그래도 어디선가 한 번쯤은 들어봤다는 느낌을 받을 것이다.

이들의 연주곡 또는 인용한 곡들이 전세계에서 아직도 끊임 없이 연주가 되고 있기 때문이다.

흐리고 바람 부는 어느 날

말을 타고 나간 카우보이는

길을 가던 도중 산등성이에서 쉬고 있었지

그 때 돌연 나타난 붉은 눈의 거대한 소떼가

거친 하늘을 가르며 구름 사이를 날고 있었네

 

낙인은 아직도 불타 오르고

발굽은 강철로 만들어져 있었어

검은 뿔은 빛을 발하고

뜨거운 입김도 느낄 수 있었지

하늘을 바라 보던 그에게는 공포가 엄습했어

비통한 울음 소리와 함께

유령들이 그에게 다가오고 있었던 거야

얼굴은 수척하고 눈빛은 흐릿한

그 유령들의 옷은 땀으로 흠뻑 젖은 채

소떼를 쫓고 있었지만 아직 잡지 못했어

 영원토록 말을 타야 할 운명이니까
